Highlights from the Apple Event 2016

Have you been as excited as me to see the Apple Event and finally see the new iPhone 7? There have been many rumors before, most of them got confirmed but some things were different (i.e. the color of the new shiny black iPhone is not called “Piano Black” but “Jet Black”). But this is just a minor thing. I liked most that the iPhone 7 is water resistant (not waterproof, though). It should survive one meter of deepness, though.

But let’s start from the beginning. What has been announced today?

Super Mario Run

Super MaIMG_0224rio Run comes to iPhone. This is great news to me as I loved to play Super Mario as a kid and I will for sure try it out. I am more the Super Mario generation and not so much the Pokémon one.

ConnectED and Swift Playground

Apple also lauIMG_0227nched ConnectED to support schools with digital learning. With Swift they introduced an app that allows everybody to code. Many schools in the USA have already added Swift coding to their curriculum.

iWork

The iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, Keynote) got enhanced with Real-time collaboration.

Apple Watch

Apple Watch will be enhanced with watchOS 3 that comes with quicker access to apps, the dock, more fitness app integrations. Also Pokémon Go will be available on the Apple Watch and you can chase them even while working out and will never miss a Pokémon or a Pokéstop anymore.

The new Apple Watch version 2 itself will come with water resistance up to 50 meters which enables users to do swim workouts and other sports like windsurfing or rowing. It will have better specifications like:

  • A dual core chip
  • 2x brighter display
  • Built-in GPS (so you can leave the phone at home while running)

It will also be available in ceramic white.

An cooperation with Nike also made the Apple Watch Nike+ possible which is specifically tailored to runners. They can start a run immediately by just talking to Siri. The band has holes so that sweat production under the band is reduced.

New features in iOS 10 and the iPhone

Home automation

Home automation has been extended on iPhone. Almost all manufacturers of home automation products support Home Kit. If they wear the label “Compatible with Apple Home Kit” then you can control them with your iPhone out of the box.

Apple Maps

Apple Maps got a makeover and certain actions like booking a restaurant can be done right from within Apple Maps. The API is open to developers so that more integrations with Apple Maps will be coming.

iMessage

iMessage was enriched with lots of smileys and stickers that are available in the iMessage sticker shop. You can also make balloons or confetti cover the screen and execute actions like mobile payments right from within the app.

Siri

Siri has been enhanced so that you can do things like ordering a car (Uber, Lyft) all without leaving Siri. The Siri API is also available to developers.

Lock screen

The revamped lock screen in iOS 10 allows to fulfill tasks right from the home screen.

Camera

IMG_0251They have done amazing things with the camera. It is a 12MP camera with optical image stabilization high-speed sensor, quad-LED True Tone flash, Apple-designed ISP, wide color gamut and a six-element lens with f/1.8 aperture. It takes amazing photos, comparable to a pro camera. The iPhone 7 Plus even has two lenses so that also a 2x optical zoom is possible. The higher zoom, up to 10x, is software-based. In the front, they added a 7MP FaceTime HD camera.

Home Button

The home button will not be a button anymore but integrated into the device and it will use 3D touch technology.

More features are:

  • 4.7″ Retina HD display with wide color gamut
  • Water and dust resistance
  • Stereo speakers (no headphone jack anymore)
  • A10 Fusion chip (very powerful)
  • LTE Advanced up to 450Mbps
  • Longer battery life

With the abolishment of the headphone jack, Apple also introduced AirPods – as they believe that the future will be wireless. The technology looks great apple-liveblog0629.jpgbut I could already read on Social Media that people are concerned of losing them or that they get stolen right out of their ears. There might be a truth to it. They are also quite pricy at $159. Let’s see how people adopt them. I will stick with my EarPods for now. However, I can imagine that it’s cool to have them connected to all your devices and seamlessly switch from one device to another. For example, if you are away from your phone or your phone is in your bag and you receive a call on your Apple Watch, you could take it right from there using the AirPods.

So, what budget do you need to consider if you would like to get a new iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus?

The iPhone 7 starts at $649 and the iPhone 7 Plus starts at $769. They both come with 32GB, 128GB and 256GB of storage.

Will you get one? I will, as I still have my iPhone 5s. I kept it because I liked the size of it. But I guess it’s time to move to a bigger display. I hope they are not that heavy.

Let me know what you think!

Have a great day!
