How to unlock your MacBook with your Apple Watch

With MacOS 10.12 (MacOS Sierra), Apple advertised that it will be possible to unlock your MacBook with your Apple Watch. You also need iOS 10 and WatchOS 3. I couldn’t wait to try it out, followed all the steps you could read in various articles online but I just didn’t get it to work. I managed to get to the lock screen and had this little animation spin looking to unlock the Mac with an Apple Watch but eventually, it didn’t unlock and I had to enter the password. As this process took me much longer than just immediately entering the password, I reversed the “unlock with Apple Watch” setting and contacted Apple Support on Twitter. They sent me the same instructions that I had already gone through (enable two-factor authentication, check “Allow your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac” in the Security & Privacy settings and then all the troubleshooting: un-pair and repair Apple Watch, sign out and into iCloud etc.). Nothing helped. They wanted me to open an official case with them but I was convinced it was a bug and they will fix it.

Today was the magic day! Not doing anything my boyfriend got a notification on his Mac that it will now be possible to unlock the Mac with the Apple Watch. He texted me and I thought, maybe Apple did something and now it works for me, too! And tadaa, it worked – on both my MacBooks, private and work! I’m a happy person!

The question is only, what changed? Is it the latest betas we have on our iPhone 7s and Apple Watches or did Apple fix anything in iCloud? I am not really sure and it’s difficult to troubleshoot as we both have the betas installed. But I invite you to try it out!

Here is an article about the steps.

As a next step, I will try out how close you need to be to the Mac so that it unlocks. Cause, I want to prevent that if I’m in the same room, somebody else could unlock my Mac. I will keep you posted!

I hope this was helpful and please let me know if you managed to unlock your Mac with your Apple Watch and if it was with the latest betas installed or without. This will help us figuring out whether it was an OS or iCloud issue.

Thanks a lot and good night from me!
