This is the final part in a series of articles that offer an overview of the options for mobile development. Part 1 laid out the spectrum from mobile web to native that you can see in the diagram below and dove into the mobile web option.

Part 2 looked at the hybrid and hybrid/native options, and Part 3 looked at the JavaScript native, cross-compiled and native development options. This article, Part 4, will look at which mobile option you should choose when deciding how to develop your mobile app project.

Trade-offs of app development options

In truth, there is no one correct choice — it’s a matter of which trade-offs make the most sense for your particular use case. If you choose an option toward the mobile web end of the spectrum, you’ll typically get faster development and more code and skill reuse, but there will be trade-offs in performance and perhaps some limitations in user experience or capabilities.
